lol she has a point though i can cook eggs because the clear turns white when it's done and i only have to watch for a minute or so meat is hard because you can't see inside and burnt meat is as bad for you as raw meat
theres different tricks to meat. juices run clear with chicken and the pinks gone. you poke beef to see how squishy it is. you can also get meat thermometers to stick into meat if you dont trust yourself.
[Was Noah a cook? Not really. Cooking's a pain when you have one working arm. But he sure watches cooking shows like an addict, so he's learned some things. ]
[ The only cooking shows Ryoji recalls watching are things like... "Here is a pineapple, sea bass, and cup of marshmallows. Make something edible." challenges. Not exactly a level he can contend with. ]
(*〇*) you sure know your stuff! maybe i should hire you to cook for me? lol i'm too used to eating out... recipes don't look too hard on paper, but they don't go into the details like juices and squishiness (ー_ーゞ
[There's a pause. He should say no. This is a stranger, he doesn't know him. That means he shouldn't trust him. Lots of bad things could happen.
But Ryoji seemed nice. If anything, his cheerful, easy-going and friendly attitude was reminding him a lot of his dad. Maybe that's why he hadn't hung up yet. He knew this guy wasn't his dad, but this conversation felt almost familiar. Like something he would with his dad, if he was better and closer by. Which for Noah, it was a blessing since the past several weeks have been full of nothing but unfamiliar things. it makes him all the more inclined to ignore his defensive fears.]
i'm not sure i'd be able to help much with homework anyways depending on the level and topic it's all hard but my apartment is at Crimson Crest if you want to meet up front in an hour! can you see my profile picture via Retrospec? that's me~
[ It's an hour later, more or less... erring on the side of more, because Ryoji had walked part of the way back after getting off the bus, plastic bags slug on both arms as he picks his way back to the apartments. His sense of time is questionable, but he does actively look out for Noah's red-brown hair. ]
[Fortunately for Ryoji, Noah's own sense of direction is horrendous so he too is late getting there. So by the time Ryoji finally arrives, Noah is sitting on the stairs- looking at his phone that's being held by his good arm. The other arm is nothing more than a prosthetic, though most of it is covered up by a long sleeve.]
[ Ryoji calls out the name as if they were long time friends, with the confidence that he's got the right person, as the prosthetic is more telling than hair color that may change in between taking the profile picture and now. He holds out one of the plastic bags out for Noah to take— the aforementioned container of mushrooms settled on top, half a dozen green peppers, and a single sweet potato. Hold this so he can get his keys out. ]
[ Ryoji parrots the greeting back over the jingling of the apartment keys— three on a single ring, one for each the front door, the mailbox, and the unit door, and he can never remember which is which. Noah sounds less assured that Ryoji would have expected, seeing how he write in his texts, but it's also the more common response to meeting strangers as opposed to Ryoji's nonchalance. ]
My unit's on the first floor, towards the end of the hall. My mother and I living there, but she's out with her friends today, so it'll just be you and me.
[Noah meanwhile is not surprised by Ryoji's nonchalance about all this. He came off this way in the text messages, and honestly his dad was this way too. Just completely nonchalant to new people and situations, which tended to be the exact opposite of how Noah tended to be.]
Alright. [That seems normal enough.] Uh, does she know I'm here?
[Honestly Noah has no idea if parents are supposed to know if you're inviting someone over or not. Inviting friends over isn't a thing when you don't have any.]
[ Don't learn from Ryoji. Parents are supposed to know, and even though Ryojis is 19 and technically an adult who may be trusted to have people over without supervision, it's not his apartment alone. ]
She might be back soon, or not. Did you want to meet her?
[ Communication isn't very great between Ryoji and his mother... He's used to having his own space and doing his own thing, leaving his shoes inside the front door when he unlocks it and setting the bags of groceries down on the kitchen island. Come in, make yourself at home, etc. He's not a great guest either. ]
[ It's kind of uncool, especially for strangers, but Ryoji either doesn't notice Noah's discomfort or more likely, he doesn't think anything about it because he likes meeting people's parents, asking about their jobs or life stories or what they like best about their kids— he's nosy.
Just the two of them here though, he's much quieter, unpacking the groceries from his bag and also relieving Noah of the one he'd made him carry. ] What do you like to eat, Noah? These are what ingredients we can use. There's also three dozen eggs in the fridge.
[When he relieves Noah of the bag, Noah stands awkwardly for a moment, not sure what to do, before he finally opts to lean against the counter in a cool fashion. Yeah!!]
-- Why three dozen eggs?
[r u gaston Ryoji]
I dunno, I'll eat whatever. [It's true, he loves almost all foods] Er, I mean- spicy stuff's good.
Eggs last up to five weeks refrigerated, and can be made into all sorts of dishes. They were also on sale, so I took advantage!
[ He sounds so proud of himself for buying what was four dozen eggs, but after finishing just one dozen, he's already getting sick of them... help... ]
Maybe we can make some sort of spicy mushroom soufflé. Could you look up a recipe that sounds easy and tell me what I need, cooking adviser?
Yes! [ To both of those questions; what's wrong with a soufflé? Ryoji likes them, and making what you like is apparently the most important thing about cooking that he's learned, never mind difficulty level. ]
Soufflés are just egg, milk, flour, cheese, mushroom... [ He ticks off the ingredients one by one on his fingers, never having made one before but they're sort of like a puff pastry in that the common ingredients he has around the kitchen. ] You bake it and bam! Done.
[ Easy. More like, he's counting on Noah to make it so. ]
[ You're a good friend, Noah, and him giving into Ryoji's whims despite obvious reluctance is something Ryoji shows away for future reference, for now looking over Noah's shoulder at the recipe displayed on his phone. ]
I think we have a baking dish somewhere... Of if muffin tins work, I know we have those. It doesn't look that hard— only five steps!

[Meeting parents...is that uncool? Fuck.]
No, shit, that's okay! I'm fine.
[He tries to follow suit, and takes off his own shoes at the door as he follows Ryoji. God he feels so out of his element.]
So what are we making?

[Because uh yeah even on sale that's a LOT of eggs to buy. He loves to eat and he's not even sure what the hell you'd do with that many eggs. ]

Noah has a bad feeling about this, but if that's what Ryoji wants to make!]
Alright, alright. Lemme find a recipe.
[He pulls out his phone and starts doing a search. A moment later, he pulls up one]
Okay, you also need butter, salt, and a souffle dish. [...Which he's betting this guy doesn't have...] Maybe a baking dish would work too.
