Hmm, alright.

[ It's kind of uncool, especially for strangers, but Ryoji either doesn't notice Noah's discomfort or more likely, he doesn't think anything about it because he likes meeting people's parents, asking about their jobs or life stories or what they like best about their kids— he's nosy.

Just the two of them here though, he's much quieter, unpacking the groceries from his bag and also relieving Noah of the one he'd made him carry. ]
What do you like to eat, Noah? These are what ingredients we can use. There's also three dozen eggs in the fridge.

Eggs last up to five weeks refrigerated, and can be made into all sorts of dishes. They were also on sale, so I took advantage!

[ He sounds so proud of himself for buying what was four dozen eggs, but after finishing just one dozen, he's already getting sick of them... help... ]

Maybe we can make some sort of spicy mushroom soufflé. Could you look up a recipe that sounds easy and tell me what I need, cooking adviser?

[personal profile] appraiser 2017-03-11 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! [ To both of those questions; what's wrong with a soufflé? Ryoji likes them, and making what you like is apparently the most important thing about cooking that he's learned, never mind difficulty level. ]

Soufflés are just egg, milk, flour, cheese, mushroom... [ He ticks off the ingredients one by one on his fingers, never having made one before but they're sort of like a puff pastry in that the common ingredients he has around the kitchen. ] You bake it and bam! Done.

[ Easy. More like, he's counting on Noah to make it so. ]

[ You're a good friend, Noah, and him giving into Ryoji's whims despite obvious reluctance is something Ryoji shows away for future reference, for now looking over Noah's shoulder at the recipe displayed on his phone. ]

I think we have a baking dish somewhere... Of if muffin tins work, I know we have those. It doesn't look that hard— only five steps!

What's the difference between a saucepan and a regular pan?

[ S ORRY this is the novice chef you have to work with ]

[personal profile] appraiser 2017-03-11 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Ryoji kneels down to where the pots and pans are kept in the cabinets, sifting through the various cookware until he finds something that fits the bill and brings it out. ]

All I have is this pot, will it do? [ The difference between a saucepan and a pot? A saucepan has one long handle, a pot has two short ones, and culinary terminology is confusing. Especially when he looks at the phone screen to check how much butter he needs to cut off from the stick he gets out from the fridge. ]

"2 and 1/2 tablespoons"... how many inches is that...?

[personal profile] appraiser 2017-03-12 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
[ So it is... He's only ever buttered toast before, and the exact measurement for buttered toast is "liberal". Butter goes into the pan and onto the stoke to melt down, a bag of flour and milk to whisk in... after he picks up Noah's phone to look up what a whisk is, and then eggs. It goes alright until the eggs. Four yolks and five whites is where Ryoji pauses in the recipe, because what do ]

Cooking adviser.....

[personal profile] appraiser 2017-03-12 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
[ Adviser, be more confident! Ryoji sets two bowls out on the counter top. Slides them before Noah. And hands him an egg. ]

Chefs crack eggs with one hand, don't they?

[ Unvoiced: maybe teach me?
Also unvoiced: it's okay, we have three dozen eggs to practice with. ]

[personal profile] appraiser 2017-03-12 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Not neatly! You sound like you know how to do it neatly.

[personal profile] appraiser 2017-03-12 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Cracking eggs is tricky business, where you can't be too delicate or the outer membrane will keep it held together, not can you be too rough or the yolk will break and you'll get egg everywhere. Noah's egg cracking suggests to Ryoji that his egg cracking skills are at least one level higher than his, so he nods in serious concurrence. And hands him the spoon.

His intention of doing things himself has dropped off a steep cliff. ]

[personal profile] appraiser 2017-03-14 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Why are they taking turns when Noah is supposed to be doing everything for him? Ryoji's reluctant to take his turn, but alright, fine— the egg is cracked on the flat of the counter top instead of the edge of the bowl, and then very very swiftly moved over the bowl with minimal but not negligible egg loss onto the counter during the transfer. But he has the benefit of two hands to steady and tilt the bowl while he fishes the yolk back out, and he passes everything back to Noah. ]

Cooking is... kind of mundane, isn't it? [ All they've done is crack eggs. He thought it'd be more exciting, like how chefs on television are always smiling and chipper. ]

Like those cooking shows where chefs make a full course meal, dessert, and two types of paired wine in forty minutes.

[ His expectations... ]

[personal profile] appraiser 2017-03-14 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but. Have you seen it before, where in the time it takes to prepare a baked dish, they stick one pan into the oven and pull out the other: Done! [ hands in the air, possibly some eggshell ] It's magic. That's what I imagined cooking to be like.
