[He'll take a few steps back, making sure both of them are on the soft grass]
You wanna start with your stance, a lunge. You wanna put your dominant leg out front, and bend it slightly. Meanwhile your back leg should be straight. Like this-
[Naoto observes him carefully, turning so that she can mimic his stance, bending her front knee and trying to keep it straight. However, her foot is to the side rather than straight on, so it's more like a yoga pose than a lunge.] Like this?
That's because you're supposed to use your hands. [He'll move back into his own lunge, it's second nature to him. He then bends over, reaching out to touch the ground with his hands] Bend down and get into a crouch like this without moving your footing just yet.
All right... [Naoto watches him do it, and then tries to imitate it. Her form is more awkward, naturally, and she bends her leg like she's actually doing a lunge, bending forward so that her fingertips are the only ones on the ground.] I still... don't really feel like I have much leverage here.
You'll get it, don't worry. Now this is the tricky part. You need to kick your feet over your head to do the cartwheel, keeping them far apart like a pinwheel effect, and then land back in a lunge position.
[She says, taking a breath, and then tries to imitate it.
She winds up kind of doing a sort of mule kick, not nearly getting her weight under her in time, or perhaps not kicking off strong enough. Either way, her feet don't get anywhere near above her.
Naoto
Alright, fair enough.

[Demonstrates it, doing exactly what he said.]

Get your feet straight on, not to the side.
[he kicks out his own foot gently try to correct it]

Frankly, I don't see how I'm supposed to get up or lift my weight from here.

[He'll demonstrate just that. ]
And that's a cartwheel!

And she falls on her belly to the ground] --oof!
...that was tempting fate, wasn't it.

A little. But it takes practise.
Also it helps to do all the steps all together fluidly, to get momentum.
no subject
...I think that might be my one try for the time being, though.

That was a rather total failure on my end, though. What did I do wrong, other than, ah, all of it?
no subject
Well...for starters, you're too stiff. Like you're anticipating it going wrong, which tenses up your muscles and make them harder to move.

Yeah. Just try to relax. We're on grass, so you won't get hurt. Most you'll do is fall a little.

[She kicks up and off again and--
--flump. Yeah nope]

Good thing his afternoon's clear. This is going to take awhile.]
