When Ami messages, there's part of him that's tempted not to reply. To shove her away, along with the rest of the group. Safer that way isn't it? It makes you less inclined to get roped into problems, into being used.
But it's his guilt and his loneliness that finally makes him respond. He feels bad because he vaguely remembers Ami trying to chase after him. And the loneliness...well, there was lots of reasons for that. ]
